Puldohran

Enjoying splendid views across Strathgryffe to the Renfrewshire hills, Puldohran (1913-14) is among the best of the many houses which local architect James Austen Laird (1878-1950) built in Kilmacolm, first in the years before World War 1 and again in the 1930s. Clearly seen on the approach to the village from the east, its twin-gabled Voysey-like facade, harled walls and dormered red-tiled roof slopes are characteristic of Laird’s approach to domestic design. This stylistic commitment, drawing on anglophile Arts and Crafts provenance, found much favour in Kilmacolm proving fashionable from the 1890s until well into the twentieth century.
