Old Kirk Manse

A secluded L-plan house that might as easily have been built as the residence of the local laird as the home of the parish minister, its muted baronial (1930) decidedly anachronistic but still endearing. The familiar ‘old Scotch’ elements are adduced: crowstepped gables, gabletted eaves dormers, a corbelled bartizan, the roofs slated, the walls white-harled with dressed stone details. There is a tempting sense that the architect, William J.B. Wright (1883-1976), may have intended a modest hommage to the domestic work of Sir Robert Lorimer who had died only the year before.
