Kilmacolm Civic Trust

 Current Developments

The Cargill Centre

The new Cargill Centre is fully completed. The redeveloped large school building, the landscaping and the redeveloped small school all complement each other extremely well and have added a new and very attractive perspective to the heart of the village. The interior of the large building is very practical, the facilities are popular and in full use by clubs, and for meetings and displays. The Kilmacolm library has moved into the northern half of the small school building. The southern half is now occupied by The New Surgery having completed the fitting out of their new premises.

St Columba's School

The Science block has been redeveloped and the work on the two houses and the new classrooms is well underway.  The current plan is to complete in October.

Balrossie and Smithy Brae

Limited progress on these has taken place.  Clearance of the cottage on the site has taken place. The Local Plan has, however, allowed for part of the Green Belt to be used for 40 houses to enable development of the old Gasworks site at Smithy Brae.  Permission has been given for an altered number of additional units to be built at Balrossie, but no purchaser for the site has yet emerged.

Old Community Centre Building

A redevelopment of this site for mixed commercial and housing use has been approved. The developer has now completed the demolition of the old building, Some progress on foundations has been made.

Development at Avenel

Construction of six high-value houses on the property originally known as Avenel just off Knockbuckle Road continues. Five houses have been completed. Four are now occupied. No plans for the sixth property have been submitted. The first house won the Luxury Homes prize in the 2009 Herald Property Awards and the 3rd the 2010 award.

Traffic

This continues to concern the Civic Trust. We have been working in conjunction with the Community Council to impress upon Inverclyde Council that they must come up with solutions. There has been some success: (1) two new pedestrian crossing points have been constructed at the cross-roads at the centre of Kilmacolm on Bridge of Weir Road and the road narrowed at those two locations (2) Inverclyde Council has acknowledged that traffic calming measures and a pedestrian crossing point are required on Lochwinnoch Road between Duchal Road and the Cross. Some funding provision has been made to achieve this.
